Our History & Promise
1873
Originating as a family run blacksmiths, specialising in small engine repairs and machining.
1900
In the early 1900s, John Booth & Sons was instrumental in the transition from riveting to welding.
1905
In 1905, we expanded and manufactured the first fire doors, and subsequently contributed to the development of national standards.
1930
By the 1930’s, John Booth’s and Sons had achieved international recognition for our steelwork capabilities. The sign, “Steelwork: Booth, Bolton” had appeared upon work in progress in India, North & South America, Africa, and in most European countries. Workload varied from bridges and sports stadia, to conveyor buckets and industrial buildings.
1976
John Booth & Sons came to the rescue after a vessel ran into one of the main supports of the Barton Aqueduct. The damage was such that the canal route had to be temporarily shut down. Booths provided temporary works services and replaced the damaged parts with a 19-foot bespoke T-piece, which was completed in two weeks, allowing canal operations to continue in a timely manner.
1970s
The North Sea inception into the offshore market was supported by Booth Industries in the early 1970’s. Provision of steelwork and door products were in high demand.
1982
Development of blast proof doors through key MoD contracts, including the nuclear submarine base, Coulport, directs company focus towards door systems.
1993
In the wake of the Gulf War, and with the UK facing a growing security threat from terrorism, Booth Industries was commissioned to supply and install new security windows and doors to protect the Prime Minister’s Office and Staff. The upgrades we implemented remain in-situ and operational today, providing our nation’s leaders the assurance that their safety is protected by Booths
1994
As Booth continued to grow and diversify, we quickly gained a reputation as a leading hangar door supplier. Booth were chosen by British Airways to design, manufacture, install & commission a power operated cascade door system, measuring 72 metres wide by 12 metres high overall. It also incorporated an integral glazing system and was supplied finish in British Airways corporate colours.
2004
As the North Sea Oil & Gas Sector continued its growth in the early 2000’s, Booth Industries was selected as preferred supplier to design, manufacture and install the first offshore escape tunnel to align with safe egress procedure from the rigorous offshore environment. Our pioneering Jet Fire Rated Stainless Steel Escape Tunnel was installed on the Kvitjeborn topside in the Norwegian North Sea.
2015
The largest assurance programme ever undertaken within the UK Infrastructure Sector fell on Booth Industries to deliver. Our scope incorporated the design, manufacture, and installation of over 700 doors across the Elizabeth Line, including station, cross-passage, and front-of-house doors. The tragedy of Grenfell Tower in 2017 instigated a long overdue review of fire regulations, which aligned with Booth’s testing and assurance philosophy from the outset.
2015
In 2015, Booth Industries commenced design work for a specialist nuclear defence site. The working relationship between that client and Booth Industries continues today, with additional scopes for other similar sites ongoing. The contract has yielded some extremely valuable testing to date, and was instrumental in establishing a benchmark in quality that we have rolled out across all of our projects since.
2019
Avingtrans PLC acquire the trading name and all assets of Booth Industries Ltd through Stainless Metalcraft (Chatteris) Ltd. In December 2019, Booth Industries was named as the preferred supplier for 16 cargo and personnel doors to be installed at British Antarctic Survey – Rothera base. The doors have high thermal performance, coupled with trace heating, and hydraulic functionality. Booths have successfully worked with the operational team in the Antarctic to agree design principals with our knowledge of manufacturing and transportation feasibility.
2020
Thorough analysis of the business identifies our service offering as the main differentiator in our common markets. Uniting the business under four distinct product market groups allows us to maximise operational efficiency, and tailor complete services to customer demand, consolidating our position as the supplier of choice. Significant order wins on HS2, The Factory (Manchester), and additional AWE MENSA scopes provide a robust foundation for growth.
2021
Booth Industries is awarded a landmark contract directly with HS2 for the design and manufacture of cross-passage fire doors along Phase One of the route between London Euston and Birmingham. The doors form a critical life safety element of the railway, providing fire protection and emergency access between tunnels.
The award builds on Booth’s experience delivering cross-passage doors for HS1 and Crossrail, with full design acceptance confirmed by HS2 within six months of contract award.
2021
A specialist scope delivering the design, manufacture and installation of five high security steel doorsets and two blast relief panels. The project included large, bespoke doors with integrated power operation, engineered to meet stringent blast and security performance requirements.
