Project Overview
- The Silvertown Tunnel is a new 1.4km twin-bore road tunnel beneath the Thames, linking Greenwich Peninsula with Silvertown.
- Booth Industries were contracted to design, manufacture and install 15 cross passage emergency escape doors and 10 plant room doors.
- Our extensive tunnel experience — including HS2 and other major infrastructure schemes — positioned Booth as the trusted partner for this project.
What were the project complexities?
- Emergency escape doors designed to BD78/99, providing up to 2 hours of fire protection, safe evacuation routes for the public, and assured firefighter access.
- Doors required to withstand constant ±3kPa pressure cycles from the “piston effect” of traffic, while incorporating vision panels for safety awareness.
- Plant room doors required EI120 fire integrity and insulation alongside pressure fatigue resistance.
- Booth redesigned its proven road tunnel door system and substantiated performance using: Small-scale destructive testing Advanced Finite Element Analysis
- Assurance provided for a 35-year design life.
What did we overcome?
- Confined and heavily programme-driven tunnel environments demanded absolute precision.
- Any installation delay risked major knock-on impacts.
- Through early coordination with architects and contractors, we ensured: Structural openings were built to precise tolerances. Designs aligned with manufacturing and fire assurance requirements. Installation risks were removed before work began.
What did Booth achieve?
- Delivered and installed all doorsets two months ahead of schedule.
- Ensured the Silvertown Tunnel opened on time in April 2025.
