Key Statistics:
Overview
Booth Industries was entrusted by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to design, manufacture, and install high-performance insulated doors for the Rothera Research Station – the largest British Antarctic facility and a vital hub for biological research, deep-field support, and air operations.
Located at Rothera Point, Adelaide Island, this remote station operates in one of the harshest climates on Earth, where temperatures, winds, and snow conditions present extreme challenges for any engineering project.

Project Complexities
Working in the Antarctic requires innovation, precision, and reliability:
Extreme Climate Conditions
The insulated hydraulic doors must maintain full performance and airtight integrity despite sub-zero temperatures, high winds, and heavy snow loads.
Bespoke Engineering
Triple-glazed vision panels, trace heating to prevent freezing, and inwards-opening design to overcome snow accumulation.
Short Installation Window
All site work must be carried out during the Antarctic’s brief summer season, when weather allows for safe travel and outdoor operations.
Challenging Logistics
Mobilising engineers and equipment to Rothera involves complex planning. The site is accessible only by BAS aircraft from the Falkland Islands or Chile, or by BAS ships that take four days to arrive from Stanley.
Our Approach & Execution
Booth Industries provided a complete turnkey solution – from concept design to on-site commissioning. This included:
- Design & Manufacturing Excellence: Precision fabrication to exact BAS specifications.
- Adaptation for Environment: Integration of trace-heated seals and hydraulics capable of fault-free operation in extreme cold.
- On-Site Expertise: Our installation teams overcame the logistical challenge of transporting equipment and personnel across thousands of kilometres to one of the world’s most isolated work sites.

Project Impact
The success of this project reinforces Booth Industries’ capability to deliver mission-critical engineered solutions anywhere in the world – from underground transport networks to the most remote polar research stations. Our work at Rothera demonstrates not only our engineering expertise, but also our commitment to supporting science and safety in even the most inhospitable environments.
