Key Statistics:

Contract Value: c.£1.5m+
Project Duration: 2016 - 2019
Project Client: Balfour Beatty/Royal Air Force
Scope: C.P.N.I Rated Oversize Hangar Door

Overview

When Balfour Beatty needed bespoke oversize hangar doors for the RAF Marham fighter jet facilities, they turned to Booth Industries for a fully assured, specialist solution. Drawing on decades of expertise, we designed, tested, manufactured, installed and commissioned three power-operated sliding hangar doors that combined exceptional security with certified fire resistance.

The Challenge

The project demanded far more than simply providing access for aircraft. The hangar doors needed to offer maximum protection for high-value defence assets in the Finishing & Maintenance hangar, while meeting stringent MOD security standards.
  • Size & scale: Doors ranged from 17 to 34 metres wide.
  • Dual performance: Each doorset required certified fire resistance without compromising integral high-security features.
  • Complex site conditions: All work took place within an operational, highly secure defence base.

Our Solution

Using our proven Standfast sliding security doorset as the base design, we adapted and engineered the solution to deliver both fire and security certification. The final installation comprised:
  • Three bi-parting, power-operated sliding doorsets
  • Integrated emergency exits and personnel doors
  • Fully certified fire and security performance
We achieved destructive fire testing while maintaining critical security integrity — a rare and challenging feat for doors of this scale.

Overcoming the Complexities

The project required close coordination between engineering, manufacturing and installation teams, alongside specialist plant and precision logistics. Our planning ensured zero disruption to RAF operations and strict compliance with all security protocols. Lessons learned from previous large-scale projects were applied to optimise performance, durability and ease of maintenance.
The Result In just over 2.5 years from award to completion, the project was delivered on time and within budget. The completed doors continue to protect RAF Marham’s operational capability, ensuring the safety of vital national defence assets for decades to come.
